Olaf Tryggvason, baptised abroad, returns to become king of Norway and campaigns forcefully to Christianise the country and the Norse settlements of the North Atlantic. He dies at the Battle of Svolder in 1000. At this point in the timeline (995), the Bishop of Rome was Pope John XV (20 August 985 – 1 April 996).
