Under Prince Mutimir, the Serbs accept Christianity through Byzantine missions sent by Emperor Basil I, in the years after Cyril and Methodius opened the Slavic lands to the faith. A Serbian church organisation begins to take shape in the region. At this point in the timeline (c. 870), the Bishop of Rome was Pope Adrian II (14 December 867 – 14 December 872).
