Location: Denmark and Sweden
Themes: Mission

Ansgar, a monk of Corbie, accompanies the newly baptised Danish king Harald Klak north, beginning the Christian mission to Denmark. He later preaches at Birka in Sweden and becomes archbishop of Hamburg-Bremen, remembered as the 'Apostle of the North'. At this point in the timeline (826), the Bishop of Rome was Pope Eugene II (6 June 824 – 27 August 827).

## Why it matters
Ansgar's mission opened Scandinavia to Christianity, although lasting conversion came only in the following two centuries.
