# Fall of Carthage (698)

Umayyad forces under Hassan ibn al-Nu'man take and destroy Byzantine Carthage, ending Roman rule in North Africa. The Latin Christianity of Tertullian, Cyprian and Augustine slowly declines in the region over the following centuries. At this point in the timeline (698), the Bishop of Rome was Pope Sergius I (15 December 687 – 8 September 701).

## Why it matters
It marked the end of Roman North Africa, once one of the heartlands of Latin Christianity.
