# Paul shipwrecked on Malta and taken to Rome (c. 60)

Sent to Rome as a prisoner after appealing to Caesar, Paul is shipwrecked on Malta, where Acts records that he healed the father of the island's chief official, Publius. He then reaches Rome and spends two years under house arrest, receiving visitors and preaching openly. At this point in the timeline (c. 60), the Bishop of Rome was Saint Peter (c. 30 – c. 64). Dates for the earliest bishops of Rome are traditional and uncertain.

## Why it matters
It brought the most influential early missionary to the imperial capital and, in tradition, planted Christianity on Malta.
