# Mission to Nubia (543)

With the backing of Empress Theodora, the Miaphysite priest Julian reaches the Nubian kingdom of Nobadia and converts its king. The kingdoms of Makuria and Alodia follow within a few decades, beginning more than 800 years of Christian Nubia along the middle Nile. At this point in the timeline (543), the Bishop of Rome was Pope Vigilius (29 March 537 – 7 June 555).

## Why it matters
Christian Nubia became one of Africa's longest-lived Christian civilisations, lasting into the late Middle Ages.
