Location: Beth Lapat, Persian Empire
Themes: Schism

Bishop Barsauma of Nisibis convenes a synod at Beth Lapat (Gundeshapur) that adopts the Dyophysite theology associated with Theodore of Mopsuestia. Its acts were later set aside, but the Synod of Acacius in 486 confirmed the same Christology, setting the Church of the East apart from the churches of the Roman Empire. At this point in the timeline (484), the Bishop of Rome was Pope Felix III (13 March 483 – 1 March 492).

## Why it matters
It fixed the doctrinal identity of the Church of the East, which went on to carry Christianity to Central Asia, India and China.
