Augustine, bishop of Hippo and the most influential theologian of the Latin West, dies on 28 August 430 while the Vandals besiege his city. His writings on grace, sin, the church and the City of God shaped Western Christianity for more than a thousand years. At this point in the timeline (430), the Bishop of Rome was Pope Celestine I (10 September 422 – 27 July 432).

## Why it matters
Augustine's thought became the foundation of medieval Catholic theology and, later, of the Protestant reformers.
