# Synod of Markabta (424)

URL: https://christianity-history.com/timeline/424-synod-of-markabta
Location: Markabta, Persian Empire
Themes: Council

Meeting under Catholicos Dadisho, the bishops of the church in the Persian Empire declare that their catholicos answers to no Western patriarch. The Church of the East becomes formally independent of Antioch and Constantinople. At this point in the timeline (424), the Bishop of Rome was Pope Celestine I (10 September 422 – 27 July 432).

## Why it matters
Independence let the Church of the East develop its own identity and missionary reach across Asia, beyond the Roman world.
