The theologian Hippolytus opposes Pope Callixtus I and is regarded as the first antipope; he is later reconciled and venerated as a saint. At this point in the timeline (217), the Bishop of Rome was Pope Zephyrinus (198/9 – 20 December 217). His claim was contested by Antipope Hippolytus. Dates for the earliest bishops of Rome are traditional and uncertain.
