# LMS mission in Tahiti (1797)

Missionaries of the London Missionary Society land at Matavai Bay from the ship Duff, beginning Protestant missions in the Pacific. After King Pōmare II's conversion in 1812, Tahiti becomes a base for spreading Christianity across Polynesia. At this point in the timeline (1797), the Bishop of Rome was Pope Pius VI (15 February 1775 – 29 August 1799).

It began the Christianisation of the Pacific islands, today among the most Christian regions on earth.
