# Fall of Granada (1492)

Ferdinand and Isabella receive the surrender of Granada on 2 January 1492, ending the last Muslim state in Iberia and completing the Reconquista. The Jews are expelled the same year, and Muslims are forced to convert within a decade. At this point in the timeline (1492), the Bishop of Rome was Pope Alexander VI (11 August 1492 – 18 August 1503).

## Why it matters
It made Spain a wholly Catholic kingdom just as it began to carry Christianity to the Americas.
