Cardinals depose both rival popes and elect a third, deepening the schism. At this point in the timeline (1409), the Bishop of Rome was Pope Gregory XII (30 November 1406 – 4 July 1415). His claim was contested by Antipope Benedict XIII, Antipope Alexander V.
