Location: Stiklestad, Norway
Themes: Saint

King Olaf II Haraldsson, who had pressed Christianity on Norway, is killed at the Battle of Stiklestad. Venerated as a saint within a year, he became Norway's 'eternal king', and his shrine at Nidaros drew pilgrims from all over the North. At this point in the timeline (1030), the Bishop of Rome was Pope John XIX (14 May 1024 – 6 October 1032).

## Why it matters
Olaf's cult sealed Norway's conversion and made Christianity part of Norwegian national identity.
