# Maccabean Revolt (167 BCE)

Judean rebels led by the Maccabee family rise against the Seleucid king Antiochus IV after he profanes the Jerusalem Temple; the rededication of the Temple is remembered at Hanukkah. At this point in the timeline (167 BCE), there was not yet a Christian church; the Jewish people lived under a succession of Seleucid, Hasmonean, Herodian and Roman rulers, and religious life centred on the Temple in Jerusalem and its high priests.

## Why it matters
The revolt shaped Jewish ideas of martyrdom, resurrection and messianic deliverance later inherited by Christians.
